When thought leadership & national security collide

The 2017 ASIS International Security Convention recently wrapped up in Dallas, bringing over 22,000 top security professionals from over 100 nations to the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center.

Entry to ASIS security conference

In the blink of an eye, the importance of security and the safety measures available to help ensure public safety graduated from the experts’ arena to grab everyone’s concern.

ASIS has been referred to as the CES of security shows. From security robots to bomb dogs to drones, all aspects of the security industry were represented and just like recent headlines, the topic of national security was on the tip of everyone’s tongue.

Little did we know one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history would happen just days later at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

The inside look into security…and luggage

Just days before this tragic event and while VOTI DETECTION™ was exhibiting at ASIS, Rory Olson, President and CEO of our client VOTI, spoke with David Johnson, host of KRLD’s “CEO Spotlight”, about the latest developments in the security industry and shared how hotel security has increased across the globe. Specifically, Olson mentioned how hotels in foreign countries are utilizing scanners to detect potential threats in their guests’ luggage before it goes to their rooms.

When it comes to seeing inside the luggage, VOTI’s 3D Perspective™, provided via their scanners, sheds light into the dead spots that would normally be overlooked when using conventional x-ray scanning. It’s one reason VOTI scanners are growing in use and popularity from train stations in Turkey to Amazon warehouses and Air Force bases across the United States.

The evolution of national security threats

The topic of security expands beyond the topics of mass shootings and terrorist threats. While security scanners and other physical security measures are taken to help minimize risks with those types of events, what is being done for the online community and personal information that lives there?

In an effort to raise awareness, October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month and Tony Aquila, Chairman, Founder and CEO of our client Solera, has partnered with the National Cyber Security Alliance to bring attention to the ever-growing issue of cybersecurity. Threats range from identity theft to hacking government servers and holding hospital servers for ransom.

Tony’s video below shares his expert insight, detailing how to better protect yourself and your data. Just as consumers protect their private information online, they must stay vigilant on what they share with their connected devices. These days, that can include personal cars, rent cars and even all the way down to the Amazon Echo in their home.

As leaders in security and tech elevate their expertise and authoritative voices for these threats, it is imperative to share and listen to their knowledge with hopes that we can empower ourselves, lessen our chances of becoming a victim, help protect our assets and even save lives.
