The Faces Behind BizCom: Monica Feid

Meet the faces behind BizCom! We’re profiling all of our team members at the agency.

Meet Monica Feid! Monica, originally from Boston, Massachusetts, is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, TX. She is the President and co-founder of BizCom. She started working at the agency 20 years ago on October 1, 1999.

Why did you choose PR? Wow. Where should I begin? I created my first newspaper in the fourth grade for my classmates at Shenandoah Elementary. That’s no joke. I was already “shaping the news” when I was 9 years old. Then I served as the features editor for my Middle School magazine. High school solidified my writing interests, but it wasn’t until I got to college that I saw the dynamic between PR and journalism up close. And I liked PR so much more. Not to mention, it paid better.

My first job out of college was in PR for a publishing company in New York City. I was recruited back to Texas where I worked in PR and marketing for Baylor University. Both of those jobs included hiring and working with PR agencies. And I was in love with what they did, serving all kinds of clients year-round. When I moved to Dallas, I started working for a PR agency and I’ve never looked back. My boss and I later became business partners, co-founded BizCom, and the rest is history.

The best advice you have been given in regard to working in PR: Be prepared for every day to be different. It’s completely true. With the positions I’ve held – client side, media side, agency side – no two days are the same. It’s that constant evolution of news, stories, and events that help make this career challenging and rewarding at the same time. Nothing gets old. If it does, you’re not doing your job very well.

Best part of working at BizCom? The results speak for themselves. We have great people doing great work. I’ve seen how other agencies perform, and it reinforces the higher standards we are setting for ourselves. Plus, it’s also fun. When you work together to do great things, everyone comes out a winner.

I’m happiest when… Those around me are also happy. Success is truly better as a group. When a client gives us a shout out or members of the team are celebrating daily achievements, the feeling is contagious. Happiness has a ripple effect, and I want everyone swimming in that wake.

Ideal way to spend a weekend:Unplugged. I’m certainly no expert at this, but at least I have goals. It’s not an easy thing to do when your career revolves around PR, breaking news, clients who run businesses 24/7 and more. But time with my family is a sacred thing. That includes my husband, my daughter, and my dog, too! Whatever precious hours we have that are completely uninterrupted is always time well spent.

Personal motto/mantra:Zig Ziglar’s famous quote: “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Sidenote: Zig wrote the foreword to Live R.I.C.H. – a book I co-wrote with and for our client Dina Dwyer-Owens. He was an amazing man, and I’m forever grateful to have known him.

Go-to restaurant:The one that doesn’t get my husband’s order wrong. He has a serious hex wherever he goes.

If you could travel back to any decade, what would it be and why? The 1920s in Paris, to hang out with Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. But I’m not picky. I will take Paris any time.

Favorite family tradition: Family movie night. When a good movie is released, we love to kick off the weekend by going to Studio Movie Grill or Moviehouse & Eatery on a Friday night for dinner and a show.

Dream vacation: I would say Rome, but honestly, it’s whatever I’ve got on the books next. It can be a big city overseas or a desolate state park just a car ride away. I love planning family getaways, because experiences outweigh possessions every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

List 2-3 things others probably wouldn’t know about you or “fun facts”:

I got engaged just three weeks after meeting my husband. We’ll celebrate our 25thanniversary this year.

The only thing I’m missing for a Master’s Degree in American Studies from Baylor University is writing a thesis. It’s been 26 years, and I write for a living. How’s that for blowing a deadline?

Writing books may be a close second to running an agency. I just ghostwrote a new book – a personal memoir – for a client that will be published soon. It’s one of the biggest gifts to help channel the voice and personality of some of the amazing national and international leaders I work with on a daily basis.
