The Faces Behind BizCom: Grace Fortier

Meet the newest addition to the BizCom team! Grace Fortier joins the agency!

Originally from Mesa, Arizona, Grace is currently a student at Baylor University working toward her bachelor’s degree in public relations. In her new position as BizCom’s client services intern, Grace will be responsible for providing support to the media relations and digital services teams.

Why did you choose PR/media relations/digital?

I chose PR because it’s people-focused, but in a digital setting. Once I learned that you could work in social media, I knew that was the kind of job I wanted. My love for PR really blossomed in college as I gained a variety of opportunities that allowed me to explore different aspects of the craft.

What is the best advice you could give someone looking to start their career in PR?

The best advice I could give to someone looking to start their career in PR is to get involved in your community and make those connections. If you’re in college this might look like joining PRSSA, student government or Greek life. The best decision I made in college was to get involved in a variety of student organizations. These organizations allowed me to make connections that turned into future career opportunities. Another important connection to make is with your professors or people in leadership. These people have a lengthy list of connections and are usually more than willing to help connect you with someone in your industry.

When are you the happiest?

I’m happiest when I’m close to family, at the beach or shopping!

What’s an activity you have always wanted to try, but haven’t had the chance to?

An activity I’ve always wanted to try is skydiving! The most interesting part of it is how you’re just floating in the sky without falling straight to the ground. I think it would be a crazy, once in a lifetime type of activity that I want to do at some point in my 20s.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it (not work related)?

If I had an extra hour each day, I would want to spend it reading or on a run! I loved reading as a kid, and have continued into my adult years. My favorite book I’ve read recently is It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. Running is a new hobby I’ve picked up over the last few months. One of my best friends was training for a marathon which encouraged me to try out running. My favorite running spot is at McLane Stadium in Waco!

What is one talent you wished you had?

One talent I wished I had is being able to draw. One of the biggest skills you need in PR is being creative, drawing and graphic design being a sector of that. I think it would be a very useful skill to have, but it just doesn’t come natural to me!

What are a few fun facts about you?

  • I graduated high school a year early, so at graduation I was 16! My high school was a charter school, which had different degree requirements than the other public schools. Most people did programs to get their cosmetology or nursing license, or took half days senior year. I decided to take a full day of classes which allowed for early graduation - best decision I’ve ever made!

  • I’m certified in most water sports, like paddle boarding, canoe and sail. During my sophomore year of college, I needed an elective class and took paddle sports. Every class was spent on the lake, practicing some sort of water sport. By the end of the semester, our whole class got certified in each sport!

  • I don’t like coffee, but love caffeine! My go-to caffeine during the day is matcha lemonade or Coke Zero.
