This summer, I was fortunate enough to land an internship that would help shape my future in ways I could never imagine. It was a summer of learning, growing, and ultimately knowing that I’m finally doing exactly what I was made to do.

I liked public relations from learning about it and studying it in school, but after my internship at BizCom Associates, I fell in love with it. Throughout the summer, the BizCom team constantly pushed me to do things I never thought I could do, and that’s why I loved it so much. They challenged me every day in my writing, ideas and so much more. After this summer, I truly feel ready to experience the public relations world.
The internship was not always easy. There were many times I doubted myself and the things I could accomplish, but with the encouragement and help from my team, I was able to write press releases, articles, and even a chapter in a book! If you would have told me this a year ago, I don’t think I would have believed you.
Throughout the past two summers, I spent my days working in a newsroom at a news station. When I began my internship this summer, I honestly had no idea what to expect. The BizCom internship was drastically different from anything I have ever done. In most broadcast internships, there is not much for you to do. It’s mostly following reporters and watching the process of how they create a story for the public. I’m a hands-on person. I like doing my own work and being able to show it. In broadcast, that’s not the case. Yes, you can create your own story, but that story will never be shown on TV.
As much as I loved broadcast for the short time I did it, my internship this summer was the icing on top of the cake. Everyday, I worked hands-on with everyone around me. I wrote multiple press releases every week and as the summer went on, I grew as a writer. This could have never happened if the team did not put their trust in me and really believe that I could do it. And that is something I will be forever grateful for.
One thing I got to do a lot of this summer was video editing. Yes, you read that correctly. This internship gave me the opportunity to bring one of my skills from broadcast and use it toward public relations. I didn’t know if anything from my past internships would be beneficial toward my one this summer, and it was a great feeling to know that those certain skills would be put to use doing the one thing I love most.
As the summer came to a close, I didn’t want to leave. Texas treated me well, but BizCom Associates treated me even better. I have a newfound respect for agency PR and the people who do it every single day. And in a year, I hope to be one of those people. I have no idea where I’ll be, but I do know that this summer prepared me for what’s ahead. BizCom Associates taught me how to do my best and to make the most of every situation you are in.
Agency fun was included too!
So my advice – don’t be afraid to open your mind to new ideas and situations. I am so thankful I went out on a limb, moved to Texas, and took this internship. It was terrifying at times, but it was an experience I will never forget and will always be thankful for.
